COVID-19 Testing Q & A

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing refers to the various tests that check for a current or past COVID-19 infection. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the newly discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

What are the types of COVID-19 testing?

Formé Medical Center and Urgent Care is a state-of-the-art medical facility that offers many types of COVID-19 testing. The tests available include:

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) COVID-19 test

The PCR COVID-19 test is a nasal swab that tests for an active infection. It’s the most reliable test for diagnosing COVID-19. However, getting the results from the PCR COVID-19 test may take several hours or days.

Rapid COVID-19 test

The rapid COVID-19 test checks for a current COVID-19 infection. Also known as the antigen test, the rapid COVID-19 test looks for protein markers — antigens — associated with SARS-CoV-2.

Like the PCR test, the rapid COVID-19 test is a nasal swab test that collects secretions from your nose. With the rapid test, you can expect results within 15 minutes. However, the rapid COVID-19 test results are less accurate than the PCR test and you can test negative even if you have the virus.

The team at Formé Medical Center and Urgent Care may perform the rapid test to screen for COVID-19 and follow up with the PCR test to confirm your results.

COVID-19 antibody testing

The COVID-19 antibody test checks to see if you have antibodies that may protect you from the virus. You may have antibodies from a past COVID-19 infection.

The COVID-19 antibody test is a blood test and it may take a week or more to get your results.

Who needs COVID-19 testing?

Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms should get a PCR or rapid COVID-19 test. Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever
  • Dry cough
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Rash

You should also undergo COVID-19 testing if you had close contact with someone who recently tested positive for the disease.

The Formé Medical Center and Urgent Care team may recommend COVID-19 antibody testing if you think you had COVID-19, but never got tested.

Formé Medical Center and Urgent Care offers same-day PCR COVID-19 testing before 1pm. They perform COVID-19 testing Monday through Friday from 8 am-8 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am-3pm.
